Vanilla Slice at Haytch Cafe in Thornbury

At the front of this cafe in thornbury, there was this sign that said

The famous vanilla slice! Whenever i see a sign like that, i get curious! Its pretty bold to put a statement like that out there! I was on a Day of the Donut, with Tilly today, where we go to different places to try out donuts, but i felt like since i was here, i should try out the vanilla slice.

So firstly i got a mocha

It came complete with a H coffee art on it! (The owners names start with H, and their nickname is Haytch!).

It was a good mocha! πŸ™‚

Then the rest came out

After devouring the delicious donut, i picked up the vanilla slice with my fingers, ready to get into it! It tastes better to me that way haha!

And one bite, and i knew they were correct with the sign out the front. It was a good vanilla slice!! I had a good time eating that! πŸ™‚

And some other things i liked about Haytch. The service was so friendly!

And also, this wall art!

Its by mimbyjonesrobinsonart, and i think its beautiful! πŸ™‚

Haytch is at 690 high st in thornbury

JD’s Burgers, Dragonball themed Burger place in Surrey Hills

Lisa Lai told me about this place a while ago, and i was catching up with my friend Nick who is a massive dragonball fan, and i thought this would be the perfect opportunity!

Firstly, it is literally a step outside Mont Albert train station haha!

So convenient!

As i waited for Nick, someone waved at me and came up to me. It was Dom!!! What a pleasant surprise! And he was with Linda!! Apparently theyd seen me sitting on the bench and thought is that Thuan? Haha!! At an anime burger joint, the chances are high hehe!

Then Nick arrived and we went inside! I dont know that much about dragonball. Ive only seen the last two movies. But i still geeked out hard at the dragonball theme!!

And then we went to order. I love that the burgers are named after dragonball characters! I ended up choosing the Goku Fusion.

It was delicious!! A really good burger πŸ™‚

Nick chatted to me about dragonball and explained a lot about what was going in with the new anime. It was the perfect venue! πŸ™‚ and the service was lovely too!

Definitely check this place out if you are in the area and feel like a good burger. And even more so if u are a dragonball fan πŸ˜€

Its at 17 hamilton st in mont albert

Chocolate Chess Tart, Beatrix in North Melbourne

My friends Fiona and Tilly often tag me in facebook posts from this place called Beatrix, and they always have the most creative, delicious looking stuff! Today Tilly and I were passing through North Melbourne and we decided to stop by to check it out. And im glad we did! It was a great place!

Its a cosy little store, with a variety of delicious cakes on display. On their instagram page for today, they showed a picture of something called a chocolate chess pie, and they used the hashtag #piethinkiloveyou ! πŸ™‚ i love puns so i loved that! So when i was choosing what to get, i decided to try this chocolate chess pie!

But first i wanna show u a pic of the tables outside:

They had bottles of sunscreen for their patrons on each of the tables! I loved that. I had never seen this done before. Dont you love a place that cares about its patrons? πŸ™‚

Ok so this is what i had:

It was great! I loved that it wasnt too sweet, it was just right! And the pastry part of it was firm enough that i could pick it up and eat it that way if i wanted! (And i did take a few glorious bites this way!) The pie was just the right amount of moistness! Yes it was fab! And i got to try Tilly’s crumble that she ordered and that was delicious too!

So if u are around north mellbourne and are looking for somewhere to go for coffee and cake, i think Beatrix is a great place πŸ™‚ its at 688 Queensberrt St North Melbourne πŸ™‚

Churros in Chocolate, from A Touchof Spain food truck, outside NGV

I was waiting for my friend in front of the National Gallery of Victoria on this sunny sunday, and i noticed this sign nearby.

β€œThe best churros with chocolate in the World!”

Now that is a bold claim and it really piqued my interest! I always think, you have to be pretty confident in your wares to say that πŸ™‚ i knew I really wanted to try. Once id met my friend and we’d grabbed some food from the nearby market stalls, we were crossing the road to go to the park when my friend said β€œare you gonna try those churros?”.

We were in the MIDDLE of crossing the road when i decided, you know what? I am going to try these. today!! I need to know. Are they the best in the world? πŸ˜€

So we went over and sat down near the food truck. I went up to order some churros and chocolate. And the man said β€œdo you mind waiting for 5 minutes? We have to cook it. Its good when you eat it hot.” I was like thats fine! Ill just eat this market food i have first (delicious Alepas!)

So i was sitting and eating my Alepas and after a while my friend said β€œThese churros are taking a while”

And i joked, maybe hes timing it to that when i finish eating, he can serve it to me straight away.

β€œWell hes just got a few seconds, because youre about to finish” she said.

And i finished eating my alepas. Put it down. Then 10 seconds later, the churros man waved me over to the truck to get my churros!!

Like he waited until i finished eating before serving me my churros!

This is a guy who cares about his customers and their eating experiences.

And here they are. I had a good feeling as soon as i saw them. The i ate them.

Yes!

Those churros were so good! Just perfect.

My friend agreed!

We thoroughly enjoyed eating them πŸ™‚ and they do get my vote too hhaha!! I can vouch for this sign πŸ˜€

The truck is outside the NGV, probably every weekend when the market is on! They also have a facebook page πŸ™‚

Good churros! πŸ™‚

Breakfast at The Grain Store, city

Hmmm! Sometimes when something bad happens, it can turn out to be really good in hindsight! πŸ™‚ Tilly and i planned to go to Sweet Evelyn in Brunswick for this mango panna cotta, but she starts work at 8am, so we decided to be crazy and get to Sweet Evelyn at like 6:30am hahah! Anything for an adventure right? So i woke up at 3:15am, got to Springvale station nice and early and waited for the first train. The 4:46am train! I was so proud of myself getting there, with time to spare! Sleepy as i was, i happily waited. And waited.

Then i heard the announcement that there was signal failures and the train wouldnt arrive until 5:15! This was a spanner in the works of our morning, as we had timed this breakfast trip to Sweet Evelyn down to the last minute hahah!

I thought to myself, i am bummed i might miss out on this panna cotta today… but i did do all i could…. so i guess thats ok…

So i met Tilly at 6am in the city and it was still dark! In my sleepy-ish state, i was kind of enjoying it.. it still was an adventure! She suggested we go somewhere in the city, since we wouldnt have time to go to brunswick and back before her shift. And immediately my brain thought of The Grain Store! (Well done sleepy brain! You did good! :D). My friend Stefanie had told me the Grain Store was a good place for breakfast a few years ago actually, but i never got around to it. But today was the perfect chance to try it!

We walked there and went in as soon as it opened at 7am.

I immediately liked it! Some places just have a nice vibe! πŸ™‚

Our waittress was lovely! Initially i was going to order the white chocolate pancakes, but she said we have a special today, which was French Toast with Nutella (and other things too, but as soon as she said β€œnutella” my brain decided and i stopped listening to the rest hahaha). Tilly ordered the pancakes, so i got to try some of it too! Win-win! πŸ˜€

They were yummmm!

And here is my french toast:

It was so yum! I was so impressed with it! It had so many different flavours and textures and as Tilly said, they all complimented each other (shes been watching a lot of Project Runway hahaha).

I enjoyed that!

Im glad i finally got to try breakfast at the Grain Store! Its at 514 Flinders Lane in the city πŸ™‚

Code Black Coffee, Docklands

My friend Kodi recommended this place to me! Its a little cafe in docklands. It has such a fun and friendly vibe, I really enjoyed being here. I ordered a coffee and also one of the big milk chocolate cookies!

Look at that glorious thing! πŸ™‚ i loved eating it! There was actually a choice of three different cookies, but i went with this one because the lovely Francis who works here said it was her favourite, and it was already the one i was leaning towards, so easy decision! Mmmmmmm. It was yum πŸ™‚

And so was the coffee!

They also have baguettes and stuff if you want to have lunch here.

A really nice place. I had a great time here, especially on such a nice Spring day as today πŸ™‚ im glad i came to check out Kodi’s recommendation! Its on Karlsruhe Lane in Docklands πŸ™‚

Blue Ocean Milkshake and Baguette at Blue Rose Baguette, South Yarra

What a great random find! I had gone out with Kirsty to see a play called Self on Chapel on Chapel, and afterwards, i felt like a milkshake so we wandered down chapl street and kirsty saw this small place that had milkshakes on the menu. It looked just like a standard fish and chip shop, but i wasnt sure how far we’d have to walk to find another milkshake place, so we decided to give this place a shot! (Plus i like the idea of Blue Roses, so that helped sway things too :D)

I saw they had a milkshake called Blue Ocean, so i went with that! I was just expecting a normal milkshake in a glass with a straw and maybe it was blue coloured. kirsty and i had a good long chat. After a while we thought, hmm these milkshakes are taking a while. And the later, these were brought out:

I was in shock! I was not expecting something so beautiful! Ahhhhh! It made me happy just looking at it! I had fun eating the layer of chocolate and coconut off the side of the glass. So lamington!

And that marshmallow was the biggest and possibly the best marshmallow ive had. I had so much fun eating it. And it was so yum too, not too sweet! And i really appreciate that it was lightly toasted!

And the drink itself was so yum! Noce flavour and not too sweet! I felt really great after id finished that and i think kirsty and i spent the entire time just giggling like kids when were were eating/drinking this!

It was made with love for sure! So after telling the staff how amazing it was, we left.

And that was that!

Only it wasnt!

Cos i decided i wanted to try their food too! I have this theory that a place thats good, does everything good. And so i ordered a crispy pork baguette

And yes! It was good!! Juicy, flavoursome and solid! Id happily come back to this place to eat any time πŸ™‚

Its at 350 chapel street in south yarra. The staff are really awesome too πŸ™‚

Im really glad we gave this little fish and chip looking shop a try! What a pleasant surprise πŸ™‚

Pho Dakao Hoang, Vietnamese restaurant in Springvale

My friend Fiona has a favourite Vietnamese reataurant she likes to go to in Springvale. Today, I was going to dinner with some workmates and they asked me where should we go eat in Springvale. I love trying new places and so i took this opportunity to check out Fiona’s fav springvale restaurant! And boy am i glad i did!

When we went inside, it was nice and busy! Not bad for early on a thursday night! Its always a reassuring feeling going into a place that is bustling!

We all ordered dishes to share and we ended up getting rice paper rolls, lemon chicken, fried calamari and sweet and sour chicken.

And i got my beloved 3 colour drink of course! Mmmmmm

The rice paper rolls were good!

I have eaten so much vietnamese food in my life, i feel pretty good judging it haha.. and this spring roll was solid! I dont like places that skimp on things. And this place did not skimp! Just a great rice paper roll! πŸ™‚

Everything was yummy. One real standout for me, was the fried calamari

It was so tender and yummy! I was really impressed!

We finished off with a banana fritter.

Mmmmmmm!

Great meal! And really good prices! (I love springvale heheh). And the service was nice too!

One of my fav places to eat vietnamese food in springvale now!

Pho Dakao Hoang is at 17 balmoral avenue in springvale πŸ™‚

Studio Ghibli day at Mister Nice Guy’s Bakehouse, Ascot Vale

This month has been really fun! Various cinemas around melbourne have been doing a Celebrate Ghibli festival and showing lots of animated movies from the awesome Studio Ghibli. And my friend told me this bakery called Mister Nice Guys Bakehouse was doing a day where they would be doing a Studio Ghibli theme! I was seeing Book of Mormon with my friend that afternoon, but i knew i had to try and squeeze a visit in the morning to this bakery!

So on a sunday morning i trekked over to the other side of town by train. It was raining a little and i had to take out my umbrella. That was PERFECT!! Because in my favourite Ghibli cartoon, My Neighbour Totoro, theres a scene where they wait in the rain at a bus stop, and they use umbrellas πŸ˜€

So my plan was to rock up, grab a totoro donut, then head back to the city to meet my friend before the musical. Quick right? I was wrong hahah.

This is what i saw when i arrived:

Ahhhhhh! I thought it was only me who would get up early to go for ghibli food hehe! I was wrong and happy i was wrong πŸ™‚ ghibli fanssssss! ❀️Yeah πŸ˜€

When i finally got to the front of the line, i started to get so excited looking around at what they’d done for the theme!

Look at that!! Chalk drawing of a dragon and those dust bunny things! I loved it! I mean in my head i was thinking it would just be totoro donuts. But no… they went all out and i love it!

They had ghibli music playing. The staff were so friendly. I was just buzzing with happiness! πŸ™‚

And then i ordered! I decided to get a totoro donut and a totoro milkshake and a donut to take home for my sis. Totoro is my fav so its all about that big cuddly guy! πŸ™‚

Yup i was very happy i came down, it was a fun and delicious food adventure! πŸ™‚ i wish id known about thei Game of Thrones themed day a few weeks ago! I think they called it ‘Game of Scones’! Hhaha!! πŸ˜€

Mister Nice Guys Bakehouse is at 151 union rd in ascot vale. A short pleasant walk from ascot vale train station πŸ™‚

Maccaroni Osteria Italiana, (in Clifton Hill, with great vegan options!)

My friend Jacqui found out i love lasagna (because of Garfield haha!) and so she told me about one of her favourite places to get italian food, Maccaroni Osteria Italiana in Clifton Hill. I decided to go on an adventure to Clifton Hill and check it out!

It was pleasant night! (First night of Spring this year!).

When i finally found the restaurant, (which was conveniently quite close to Clifton Hill station) i stepped inside and immediately felt a warm, cosy vibe. The place looks nice!

I sat down and the lovely waittress handed me a menu, and i took some time reading it, although i had already made up my mind what i was going to order hehehe (lasagna! :D).

So i ordered a lasagna and a coke! I just love coke with my pasta for some odd reason!

While i was waiting, i saw this on the table:

I looked like croutons or something to me, and i assumed thats what it was! But i wasnt 100% sure.. it possibly could have been some crazy potpourri or something haha! But i was hungry so i just picked one up and bit into it!

Yum!! It was edible hahaah! Phew πŸ™‚ and delicious too. I ate all of them before my food came, i couldnt really stop haha.

And then my lasagna came out:

Looks good right? πŸ™‚

Add some cheese…

And then dig in! πŸ™‚

It was so flavoursome, yes!! Great tomato taste. And it was just the perfect amount of slight firmness/chewiness for me! I had a good time eating that πŸ™‚ so much so i wven forgot to drink much of my coke during the meal hehe.

Then for dessert, i ordered an almond tart with custard and apple:

Also delicious! And flavours!

I love places that obviously put a lot of thought and care into their food, and this place obviously does!

I definitely recommend checking this place out if you feel like italian. Especially if you need a place with delicious vegan options! πŸ™‚

Maccaroni Osteria Italiana is at 201 Queens parade Clifton Hill.

Edit:

I came back here again with Jacqui, Ted and Mo and it was so good once again! I ordered the gnocchi and it was so great. So soft mmmmmmmm

Love it! Yummmmmmm
